The 5 Best Retirement Verses and Scripture

Retirement for many people is a goal they push toward their whole lives. They work their careers around their retirement. Switching jobs to get a “better retirement package’ is a very common thing to do. We want to work hard and then be able to enjoy retirement and will do most anything to achieve that goal.

What does the Bible say about retirement?

What does the Bible say about retirement? Does the Bible even address this topic? Yes, it does! The Bible has a ton of insightful verses that address the idea of retirement.

Bible verse for retirement #6: Proverbs 13:22

Proverbs 13:22a is a great retirement verse that talks about preparing one’s finances in advance.

‘A good man leaveth an inheritance to his children’s children.’

This verse promotes the idea of preparing your finances so that even your children’s children are covered.

Although this retirement verse does not address retirement specifically, it does speak to preparing for the future. Finances are all a part of that equation. We are to look forward to being able to provide for our children and not just our children, but our children’s children. If we are responsible with our finances, we could potentially take care of two generations.

Bible verse for retirement #5: Isaiah 46:4a

The fifth best Bible verse that talks about retirement is Isaiah 46:4a.

‘Even until your old age I am he; and even to hoar hairs will I carry you.’

God takes care of you even until you are old and have grey hair. What an encouraging thought!

When we grow old, we can have a tendency to feel we are less useful or unneeded. Thisverse shows that God takes care of you and is still the same God as in your youth. Retiring people are valuable to God and the wisdom they hold is invaluable to younger Christians. If God places value on their lives, we should as well.

Bible verse for retirement #4: Luke 1:23

The 4th best Bible verse that talks about retirement is Luke 1:23.

‘And when his time of service was ended, he went to his home.”

His service was done and he went home to rest. Rest--just the word--sounds like a sigh of relief.

Retirement should be a time of rest. Although I know a lot of retired people who are still very active, there is not the stress level financially to cause them to work as hard as they did in their younger years. Working is very clearly regarded in the Bible in so many passages, but it’s a comfort to know that the Lord also addresses ending the work too.

Bible verse for retirement #3: Jeremiah 29:11

The third best Bible verse that talks about retirement is Jeremiah 29:11.

“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.”

God knows the plans for our lives. Sometimes we may feel like we are in control of our lives, but in reality, God is the one in complete control. He also has thoughts toward us and has the plan. We should rest in that! It is such a huge comfort to know he loves us and knows exactly what every day will bring.

Bible verse for retirement #2: Proverbs 6:6-8

The 2nd best Bible verse that talks about retirement is in Proverbs 6:6-8.

“Go to the ant thou sluggard: consider her ways, and be wise. Which having no guide, overseer, or ruler provideth her meat in the summer and gathereth her food in the harvest.”

This verse really is a verse talking about preparation. Retirement is truly just that. It is preparation for the future. I love this verse because of how direct and clear it is. If we do not prepare, we are called out as lazy. Sometimes outside circumstances affect the end of our lives, but while we are young and able we should be working hard and preparing for a time when we won’t be as able to work. Our lives should reflect hard work, but it also should reflect a mental and spiritual rest in the Lord. Be spiritually established in the Lord

Bible verse for retirement #1: Psalm 37:7a

Psalm 37:7a says the following:

‘Rest in the Lord and wait patiently for him.’

God calls us to rest! This verse can be found on our Courage to Rest Candle, which makes a truly unique and thoughtful gift for the retiring Christian in your life. Such a beautiful reminder to rest in him in all seasons of our lives!

After researching verses that talk about retirement, I’m overwhelmed with how much the Bible says about this topic. We need to work hard in our youth, prepare financially, but ultimately rest in the Lord’s plans for our lives.
