1 Corinthians 15:1- Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye STAND.
Throughout Paul’s writings it is very common for him to exhort believers to stand. Iin Galatians 6 he says three times to stand, but in this passage in 1 Corinthians he is not exhorting the believer to stand, but where to stand. In our world today there are many many people standing for things. It is a common rally cry to stand with “x” or stand with “y”, but very rarely do we hear where to stand. Allow me to explain.
I recently replaced our mailbox. It was over 30 years old and from the previous owners of the house. After backing over it this winter, it was finished. So I set out to find a new mailbox. In my hardware store experience I met a helpful seasoned employee who shared valuable wisdom with me. He said to me “it doesn’t matter what mailbox or what post you put up there, what matters is the stand”. He then showed me that there are a variety of stands, ranging from concrete to large metal stands that need to be hammered into the ground. The employee explained that the stand and where it is placed makes the difference between a mailbox that lasts 2 years and a mailbox that lasts 30 years. Wanting a 30 year fix, I followed his advice carefully.
The stand in our lives, just like in the mailbox, makes all the difference. Christ is our foundation and our soil, but it is the gospel that we are standing on. While standing on Christ and standing on the gospel are really the same thing, the distinction gives us a different perspective. Paul says to the church at Corinth, “I preached to you the gospel and it is where you are standing.” As Christians we are invited all the time to stand in other places...to move and stand with the world, or to move and stand with this group or that group. But brothers and sisters, those stands will always fail us. Stand in the gospel, and stand confidently in it, for the gospel of Jesus Christ will never fail us!
The storms of life, internal and external temptations, and friends and foes alike will all try to move us from our place, but dear friend have courage to stand! Strengthen your faith in the gospel and stand!
